Sugar Hollow Retreat is located near the Watauga Lake and in the vicinity of the towns of Elk Mills and Buntontown. The Eclectic towns of Boone, Banner Elk, and Elizabethton are located within a 30-minute drive. Johnson City and Bristol, TN are located about 50 to 55 minutes away.
Activities and Attractions: Fishing, boating, and other water activities at the Watauga Lake and Elk River. Hike 6 miles of onsite nature trails, explore nearby waterfalls, skiing at Sugar Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, Blue Ridge Parkway, and more. Detailed list of activities and attractions listed below.
Watauga Lake
Visible from the ridges of Sugar Hollow, Watauga Lake was created as the first project of the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1947-9. The clean water of Watauga Lake is fed from nearby mountain streams and provides great fishing for trout, small and largemouth bass, crappie, walleye pike and bluegills. Sailing, house boating, water skiing and tent camping are available to visitors during the warm summer days in Eastern Tennessee. The Cherokee National Forest encompasses most of the lake with no houses permitted within 50 feet of the shoreline. Wautaga Lake has one of the largest earth filled dams in the nation and is 17 miles in length with over 110 miles of shoreline. It reaches in depth over 300 feet.
Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area

Sycamore Shoals played a significant role in 18th century history as the setting for some of the most dramatic events to occur in the expansion of America's western boundary. The Sycamore Shoals Historic Area is open from daylight to dark each day. The Visitors Center, which houses an interpretive facility with information, historic displays, and a theater is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Picnicking is available at Sycamore Shoals with tables and grills provided.
A reconstruction of Fort Wautaga, based on archaeological and historical research stands near the Sycamore Shoals river crossing. The Fort Watauga Knap-In, held each fall, demonstrates how pre-historic Native Americans made stone tools and weapons and how they were used. The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail runs from Sycamore Shoals to King's Mountain National Military Park in South Carolina.
The Overmountain Victory Trail Celebration is held in late September and features a re-enactment of the muster and march of the Overmountain Men from Sycamore Shoals to King's Mountain. The Overmountain Victory Trail marchers gather on September 25th to celebrate the historic gathering of the Patriots and their march to a decisive victory.
Elizabethton Walking Tour

The Elizabethton Walking Tour takes you into the heart of Elizabethton and the many styles of architecture that tell the story of Elizabethton through the years, from the creation of Carter County in 1796 to present day. Not only are buildings included in this tour, but significant landmarks such as the spot where the first republic established west of the Appalachians was formed in May of 1772. The self-guided tour has a brochure that can be obtained from the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce.
The Doe River Covered Bridge

Take a commute back in time with a drive through the Doe River Covered Bridge. Built in 1882, it is believed to be the oldest such bridge in the state still in use today. The white clapboard bridge spans 134 feet across the Doe River and is surrounded by a park with walking paths, benches, picnic tables and plenty of ducks that enjoy the food provided by locals and out-of-towners.
The Carter Mansion

The Carter Mansion is the oldest frame house in Tennessee built between 1775 and 1780 on lands bought from the Cherokee Indians. It is open for tours daily from May to August. Admission is free. Contact Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area for information about off-season hours.
Roan Mountain State Park

Rhododendron Gardens

Atop majestic Roan Mountain, 8,285 feet above sea level, grow the largest natural display of Catawba Rhododendron in the world. The gardens consist of over 800 acres and, although beautiful any season of the year, the gardens come into full bloom in mid June.
Andrew Johnson National Historic Site Visitors Center

Trace the life of the industrious tailor who became the 17th President of the United States. The site includes the tailor shop, 1830's Johnson House, museum, the Homestead and the National Cemetery where Johnson was buried.
Appalachian Caverns

Linn Cove Viaduct at Milepost 304.4 is the only bridge built from the top down (meaning no heavy equipment was put on the face of the mountain to protect ecology) through the use of specially trained construction helicopters. Travelers can experience the best 50 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway between mileposts 270 and 320, from just below Deep Gap to Linville Falls.
